Beginnings of a shower

This past week/weekend, David was able to get progress done on the shower and the shower pan. It looks great! At the rate the project is going, we're hoping to finish up by the end of October.

In the attic, looking at the shower head pipe

Now the pipe is nice and insulated.

Look at that beautiful shower head!

Getting ready for the first layer of mud to build the shower pan.

Mud, mud, mud. Making sure it slopes down toward the drain.

First layer is complete! Now to wait 48 hours for it to dry...

Wow, what an amazing plumber!!

While Jessica has been sitting around on her bum all day, David has been working on acquiring things to continue the bathroom project. Last week, we got necessary missing items (such as faucet fixtures and tar paper for the shower base) and David went to work Saturday and Sunday on plumbing.

Below are the pictures of his hard work. And if any of you are wondering why Jessica hasn't done anything lately, it's because she's 13 weeks pregnant! :-)

First, he installed new plywood for the floor around the new drains.

Then he hammered in the shower curb.

Beautiful curb/edging! Plus, notice the little 3/4" lining pieces. Difficult to find at Home Depot!

Then he removed the original shower valve (see top picture) and put temporary endcaps on the pipes.

Now it's time for new copper pipe fittings!

Dry-fitting the new pipes to make sure they'll work.

Close-up of the dry-fitting. Look at that fancy new shower valve!

Now it's time to solder. He's painting on some sticky stuff (flux - like flux capacitor!) that helps draw the solder into the joint.

Practice pieces from another day.

In action - heating the pipe.

In action - adding the solder.

Finished product!

After more soldering in the bathroom to connect the pipes to the valve....the finished product!

Voila! Amazing David! And there were no leaks!
Jessica still says that if the engineering thing falls through, David could definitely have a career in plumbing! Can you believe he figured out how to do all that all by himself?!? He's incredible!
